Day 5 — Gospel of John Journey

When Jesus Says, “Get Up”

“Then Jesus said to him, ‘Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.’ At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.” — John 5:8–9

For thirty-eight years, this man lived beside the pool of Bethesda. Thirty-eight years of waiting. Thirty-eight years of disappointment. Thirty-eight years of watching others step into healing while he remained stuck in the same condition.

When Jesus found him, the man did not ask a bold question of faith. He explained his limitation. He described his situation. He spoke from a place of long disappointment: “I have no one to help me…” (John 5:7). His identity had slowly become intertwined with his infirmity.

But Jesus did not focus on the years. He did not rehearse the history. He did not discuss the obstacles. Instead, He gave a command:

“Get up.”

This was remarkable. Jesus told the man to do the very thing he had been unable to do for nearly four decades. It sounded impossible. It required faith. It demanded action before visible change.

And yet, something happened in that moment. The man obeyed. He responded to the voice of Jesus. And instantly, the power of Christ accomplished what thirty-eight years had not.

This miracle reveals something profound: Jesus has authority over time, over hopelessness, and over circumstances that feel permanent. What seems immovable to us is not immovable to Him. What has defined us for years does not define us in His presence.

There are seasons in life when we grow used to our limitations. We settle beside our disappointments. We adjust to our pain. We may even begin to believe that change is no longer possible.

But Jesus still speaks.

He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He still steps into hopeless places. He still commands life where there has been stagnation. He still calls people to rise from places they thought they would never leave.

Yet there is an important question in this story: Are we willing to respond?

The miracle did not occur while the man remained lying down. It happened as he obeyed. Obedience became the doorway to transformation.

Sometimes Jesus asks us to forgive when we feel justified in holding on. Sometimes He calls us to trust when we feel afraid. Sometimes He invites us to step forward when we feel unprepared.

His commands are not burdens. They are invitations into healing.

If you feel stuck today — spiritually, emotionally, or circumstantially — listen for His voice. What is He asking you to do? It may feel small. It may feel risky. It may even feel impossible.

But when Jesus speaks, His word carries the power to accomplish what He commands.

Get up.
Trust Him.
Walk forward.

He still turns lives around — sometimes in an instant.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank You that You see the areas of my life that feel stuck, tired, or hopeless. You know the struggles that have lasted far longer than I expected. Help me to hear Your voice clearly and to respond with obedience. Give me the courage to rise when You call me to rise, to trust when You ask me to trust, and to walk forward in faith. I believe that You still have the power to change what seems impossible. Strengthen my heart to follow You. In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
